In the summer of 2005, REOS visited Olten station, Switzerland. The station is situated at the centre of five Swiss cities; Basel, Zürich, Luzern, Bern and Solothurn. As a result, a unique collection of trains can be seen passing through the station. Local, regional and international passenger trains are combined with local and international freights. All transit freight of the Bern-Lötschberg-Simplon Bahn, BLS, passes through Olten station. The SBB operated freights are mainly in the hands of the Ae 6/6 locomotives. We start at the east side of the yard, at the connecting line between Basel and Zürich. Here we warm up with a selection of mixed trains before we go to Olten station. At the station we start at the east end of the platform, looking towards Basel and Zürich. This is also the area where the yard and maintenance facilities are located. We change to the west side to watch trains departing and arriving from the Luzern, Bern and Solothurn directions. Finally we return to the east side again, to witness local and international freights mixed with local and international passenger trains.
