braw45970.jpg BRAWA 45970 KWStE 3-coach hospital train with ambulance trailer
(HO scale) Hospital train of the German Württemberg railway KWStE comprising a covered goods wagon, a luggage coach, a passenger coach and an ambulance trailer. The serious railway accident between Stuttgart and Vaihingen in 1889 showed that an efficiently-organised hospital train and ambulance service is indispensable. In collaboration with the “Württembergischen Freiwil-ligen Sanitätskorps”, a former branch of the Red Cross in Württemberg, new and more efficient organisational structures for the emergency services were established. Ambulance cars for permanent stand-by operation were built, and many passenger cars were fitted out to enable their fast and simple conversion for ambulance service. For example, they had double access doors and a fold-down platform railing. Both be-came standard features in Württemberg passenger cars. As a result, it was possible at short notice to add another five hospital trains to the full-time one during the First World War. These six trains transported 156,698 wounded individuals and many of them owe their lives to the efficiently-functioning Württemberg hospital trains. Other railway administrations leased Württemberg cars to replace their own less suitable cars in hospital trains. Epoch I, full interiors, NEM couplers, length: 344mm.
