braw43020.jpg BRAWA 43020 DRG E95 electric 2-6-6-2 in maroon
(HO scale) Heavy 2-6-6-2 articulated electric locomotive class E95 of the German Deutsche Reichsbahn Gesellschaft DRG in maroon livery. In the mid-nineteen twenties, the Deutsche Reichsbahn required a fast and powerful electric locomotive for transporting coal to Berlin. It was planned to use this locomotive for freight trains with loads of up to 2,200 tonnes and to pull passenger trains at a speed of 65 km/h. The existing locomotives were not able to meet these requirements because they either lacked the necessary power or were too slow. After various conventional designs with side rod drive had been produced, the railway company decided to build the new locomotive with a single axle drive. The necessary tractive power meant that the locomotive needed at least six driven axles, and in order to attain the planned speeds at the state of the art, additional guiding axles were necessary. The first of a total of six locomotives were delivered by AEG in late 1927. The rest had been delivered by mid-1928. The locomotives consisted of double locomotive units, each half being practically identical. This was due to consideration for the existing work status in the repair workshops. The locomotives delivered 2,418 kW of power. Their length of 20.9 m and service mass of 138.5 tonnes make them the largest and heaviest German electric locomotives ever built. Until the end of the war, the locomotives were stationed at the Hirschberg depot in Silesia. Only the E 95 06 was stationed in Kornwestheim during 1933 for comparative test runs with the new E 93. The Reichsbahn had originally planned to produce a large series of E 95s and use them on the Stuttgart to Munich line. However, due to the high purchase price, less complex locomotives were developed and only the original six were built. Epoch II, bi-directional lights, metal frame, Digital ready with NEM652 interface, operating pantographs, length: 241mm.
