T109DVD The Furka Oberalp Bahn (1986) DVD
T109DVD
Fantastic journey on the scenic Alpine route transversally connecting Brig, Andermatt, Oberalppass and Disentis, high on the Swiss Alps and through magnificent passes and valleys shadowed by mighty glaciers. Deep in the Rhone valley rises the city of Brig, where four railways meet at its station complex. The Federal SBB and BLS join from Bern, Interlaken and Geneva to reach Domodossola inside Italian territory, while the metric BVZ connects the resort of Zermatt to our marvelous Furka Oberalp Bahn on characteristic street level platforms. The FO begins its course by immediately engaging the rack on a steep climb in Goms which employes a full helicoid tunnel at Grengiols and an endless serpentine over the villages of Fiesch, Gluringen and Muenster. At Oberwald the newly constructed Basistunnel under massive Alpine formations allows a quick connection to Realp on several automobile push/pull trains as an alternative to frequently inaccessible snow bound motorways. At the east and truely at the crossroads of the Swiss Alps, Andermatt is a charming and lively alpine village as well as a large FO complex. Its station joins the old Schoellenbahn line to the terminus at Goeschenen, an important node on the SBB Gotthard railway, by way of a vertiginous 20 percent descent on the granite gorge of the Devil's Bridge. From Andermatt a spectacular series of zig- zags ascends the railway to the breathtaking pass of Oberalp, where winter lingers nine long months encrusting thick layers of ice and snow on its lake. From a peak height of 1366 meters we descend to the ancient city of Disentis and its massive Benedictine monastary, as we end our voyage crossing impressive viaducts and clinging to the vertiginous mountain flank. English, 105 MN full color. NTSC USA/CANADA/JAPAN standard.
